General Congress (ICY) and Specialised Symposium (ISSY) with ICY involvement:

2014

The 31st International Specialised Symposium on Yeast (ISSY31) was held at Nova Gorica and Vipava, Slovenia, from October 9 to 12, 2014, including approximately 260 attendees with about 150 presentations. This symposium was organized by Dr. Jure Piškur (Wine Research Centre, University of Nova Gorica, Vipava, Slovenia; Lund University, Lund, Sweden), who sadly, will only be present at this symposium in spirit, passed way, and Dr. Uroš Petrovič (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia). The title of ISSY31 was “Yeast Fermentations: form Genes to Applications Aspects”. This symposium was dedicated to yeast fermentations, from the basic concepts to the applications, and from the aspects of biodiversity and evolution to genetic regulation.

2015

The 32nd International Specialised Symposium on Yeast (ISSY32) was held at Hotel Giò-Prugia Congress Centre, Perugia, Italy, from September 13 to 17, 2015, including approximately 260 attendees with nearly 70 oral and 160 poster presentations. This symposium was organized by Dr. Pietro Buzzini (University of Perugia). The title of ISSY32 was “Yeast Biodiversity and Biotechnology in the Twenty-First Centry”. Yeasts are one of the most relevant microbial groups in both traditional fermentation and biotechnological innovative applications. However, their manifest ubiquity in the Earth’s biosphere is balanced by their diversity, specificity for habitats. This symposium was designed to provide an overview on the latest research developments on yeast ecology physiology, taxonomy, food and non-food biotechnology, genetic and genomic.

2016

The 14th International Congress on Yeasts (ICY14) was held at Awaji Yumebutai International Conference Center (Awaji, Hyogo) in Japan from September 11 to 15, 2016. This congress was organized by Dr. Hiroshi Takagi (Nara Institute of Science and Technology, Nara, Japan). The main slogan of ICY14 was “Yeasts for Global Happiness”, which enabled us to acknowledge the high-potential usefulness of yeasts contributing to the global happiness in terms of food/beverage, health/medicine, and energy/environment industries, as well as to basic biosciences. Since it was the first ICY meeting held in Japan or other Asian countries, ICY14 provided a good opportunity to widely spread the great achievements by Japanese and Asian yeast researchers, such as those by the 2016 Nobel Laureate Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi, and also, to convey the fun and importance of yeasts to the next generation of researchers from Asia and all over the world. A total of 426 “yeast lovers” from 42 countries (225 overseas and 201 domestic participants) with different generations attended ICY14 to share the latest knowledge of a wide range of yeast research fields and to join active and constructive scientific discussions. The main body of ICY14 consisted of “1 Keynote & 11 Plenary Lectures”, “Concurrent 10 Sessions and 5 Workshops” including about 160 oral presentations and “Poster Session” with nearly 250 presentations.

2017

The 33rd International Specialised Symposium on Yeast (ISSY33) was held at University College Cork, Cork, Ireland, from June 26 to 29, 2017, including nearly 300 attendees with 50 oral and 150 poster presentations. This symposium was organized by Dr. John Morrissey (University College Cork, Cork, Island). The title of ISSY33 was “Exploring and Engineering Yeasts for Industrial Application”, which covered the basic physiology and metabolism of industrial yeast strains. This symposium also considers the potential to exploit the natural biodiversity of yeasts to select or create new strains for applications with new genetic tools and approaches for reprogramming pathways to produce novel compounds in “yeast cell factories”.
